Apr 8, 2026 · 10:04

Summary

Darnell tackles Musselman's Honey Cinnamon Applesauce to answer the question every parent wonders: is this stuff actually good for your kids? The verdict? The taste and price absolutely crush it, earning solid A's for that real apple flavor and smooth texture that hits nostalgic notes. But then Darnell drops the hammer on nutrition, discovering a shocking 21 grams of added sugar per cup, which is basically 42 percent of your daily limit in one sitting. He can't wrap his head around why they're using both sugar AND honey when one would do the job. Real talk about what's really hiding in those convenient supermarket cups.

All right, so this episode Superchef vs

Supermarket, I want to tackle something that affects [music] my family, kids

You know, I see people in families buying from this section because it seems healthy

It seems like a good alternative for their kids

So, we're going to try it out

Something that

looks good

This is makes you think it's a family-oriented, [music] so I like that

Some honey cinnamon applesauce

Let's take it to the kitchen, but we're going [music] to judge it harshly, especially nutritionally, because we need to see if this is worth giving to our kids or not

So, I'll meet you in

the kitchen

All right, we're back in the kitchen

Whipping

My kids have already seen this

They already asked me to have one

They love applesauce

Um I don't know if they like applesauce if it was made just with apples

taken into a sauce, but they love applesauce from the grocery stores

I wish this is crazy cuz I don't think I gave my my kids They get it at school, daycare

That's where they get it

I'm like, where did I don't ever remember having applesauce at home.

Uh but, that's where they get it at daycare. [music] Uh so, we have Musselman's I got to be Musselman

I can spell

It doesn't seem like it would say Musselman because it's a Musselman's American Grown Apples

That's the name of the company.

I don't know

Y'all tell me if I'm spelling this saying this wrong

M U S S E L

Muscles

I eat muscles all the time

I cook muscles

And then man's, I just don't know

It seems [music] like I'm not saying it right because it's about apples, not about seafood

But, that's what it's called

This is their

honey cinnamon applesauce

This is for your kids, people

How many times you stop there and get them some applesauce? Not really understanding what's in that applesauce

Not understanding if they should have that applesauce or not

Not everything that looks right is right

But, sometimes it is

So, we're going to

get right into this

This is the show you know

We take products that you may not know, expose you to them, or sometimes we take products you do know, and we put them up and we judge them

Real simple

Taste, price, nutrition, how they talk that talk

Starting off always with

talking that talk

I mean, how do they brag on the packaging? How you going to make me stop and look at this? What makes you different than the one next to you? And let's see what they say

Big cup

They're definitely big cup

Sometimes

that's the issue with buying like little things like applesauce

Sometimes it's always little tiny [music] cups

I mean, that's good for a baby, but once they get over four, they they need a little bit more

So, shout out to your big cup

Um It's a daily serving of fruit

That's

really good

Hand-picked from our family farms

And it's a it's American grown apples

I think I think that's a huge thing

American grown apples in Pennsylvania

I like that

I'm a fan of that

They've been farming for a long time

And

let's get to some judgmental things here

Let's start with Let's start with taste

Cuz sometimes the other things can block your judgment that the nutrition ain't right, the price ain't right

You may already check out

You'll be like, oh, I'm gone

Not in my price range.

Uh but, let's go to taste

We all care about taste

All right

Oh, this is nostalgic

Y'all remember these days back in school? They used to give them to you like this

All right, let's see what this taste is like

Okay, texture's great

Reminds you

of applesauce

There's nothing really new here

Um sometimes it's a little chunky, but this is perfectly smooth

Awesome

Now I remember why I used to love applesauce

Cinnamon-y cinnamon-y

Cinnamon-y

It has a good cinnamon flavor.

It's really cinnamon-y

Um Oh my gosh, this is good

I ain't going to lie

One of the few applesauces that taste like apples, not just sweet

Um good job

Heavy on the cinnamon.

Honey

You can't taste honey

Are you tasting sugar? I mean, I'm being honest with you

But, you do taste [music] apple

Good job

Like most times you've ever had applesauce, you had a little apple

flavoring in there

And you had some sugar

This one apple first and cinnamon

But, sweetness is there, too

So, good job on this

Texture's right

Reminds you of exactly what you had as a kid.

That sugar stayed on the back of that tongue, though

That's all I can On that will say uh sugar stayed on the back of your tongue

Uh flavor-wise, B+

It is what it is

Honey cinnamon applesauce. [music] Straight to the point

Um American apples, I love that

Uh I will support

American products cuz I live in America

I want businesses to do good

I want to make farmers great again

So, um yeah, we're there on that

Good job

Taste is there

I wouldn't expect nothing different from an applesauce. [music] Um all right, so let's say I should say

I don't need nothing more than what I have here

So, I could give it a A because there's really nothing more I desire from applesauce than what I have right here

So, I'll give it A-

Good job, uh Musselman's

Um let's go price next

Price?

What what was we got on these? Musselman's sauce $2.99 for four

I don't know

What do you think about that, Evan? Is that a lot? $2.99 for four of these? They big, though

Yeah, it it ain't it ain't going to kill you. $2.99 for four, I mean, if you got a

family over four, you got to buy at least two of these, [music] so Yeah, the the mods you're going to need to buy you got to buy little little lot of those

This good, though

Uh price $2.99 for four big cups

I mean, I don't know how cheap y'all want food to be.

This is pretty in inexpensive right here, so A-

So far, you got A's

Let's put it out there

You have A's

And I have no need to give them anything [music] good

We have no relationship, no sponsorship, no money, nothing

This is just me just trying out something telling you what I

think of the taste, nutrition, the price, how they packaged it, and if you should buy or not

All right, let's get to nutrition

One cup, 130 calories

Fat zero, cholesterol zero, sodium zero

Carbs [music]

13% of your daily value, which is normal

It's an apple

I I understand that

Um protein zero, but the added sugars 21 g of added sugar is a lot

I'll be honest. [music] It's a lot for one serving of

applesauce

That's a red flag

Um that's 42% of your daily value if you're going off the 2,000 calories

That's 42% of [music] what you're supposed to have in a day

Um

but, my favorite part, as always, the ingredients

What is actually in there? First things first, apples

Huh

Boy, if it would have been something else than apples, I'd told you I'd bite

Uh apples is the first thing, as it

should be

Good job

Then we have sugar

Then we have honey

Now we have natural flavor and cinnamon

Ascorbic acid, [music] which is vitamin C

And that's pretty much it

Okay

Made from real fruit, which may

contain seeds, stems, and other pieces from natural fruit

And uh I do like that it says uh gluten-free

And honey cinnamon applesauce is not genetically [music] engineered, which a lot of apples, a lot of oranges, a lot of things are different than what they should be.

They're genetically [music] engineered to make it simple

This is not

So, that's a good product to have

But, the sugar's killing me

I don't Why do you I don't get I don't know why

I think people need to understand this

Why do you need sugar and honey? Why not

just leave you honey? I'm saying but I I get your body doesn't know the difference

You know what I'm saying? It's not going to break it down

It doesn't really Your body's not made like that

It doesn't know the difference between the two

Um

I'm just a natural person when it comes to sugar

I like natural sugars, like things that come from nature

Uh and I'm not saying like sugarcane that come from nature or anything like that

But, if it's so processed and so stripped that it is totally different

Um it spikes the the glucose

instantaneously

There's a lot of things why you shouldn't like it

Um that would be my only negative on this

Like I told you, one I was once told while this is a product that I could see someone buying and being fine with it

being in their diet every once in a while

I was told by a wise person that if the first and three ingredients [music] have sugar in it, it's a dessert

And I've always lived by that since then.

Uh the first three ingredients, [music] two of the three are are sugar

Um that's not to knock this brand

That's not to say don't buy the brand

That should should [music] be you to know

Now, you have to make a choice based off of what you want out of life

And

if you're not a sugar fanatic, I can eat this every [music] single day if I'm not like really like I don't really get sugar in a lot of places

Actually, I've been pretty much watching out [music] for it

So, if this is all I was going to get in sugar for a day, I'd be totally fine

Um but, no one eats

anything every day

So, you don't have to worry about those kind of things

No one's eating applesauce daily

So, it's not like don't get it because it's apple No, I mean, what what's that saying about applesauce? You know what I'm saying? So, just watch out for that, man

I'm going to tell you

all right now, watch out for your sugars

Um I'm going to tell any product, any brand, I encourage you [music] to use natural sweeteners

I don't encourage you to use um added sugars

I don't encourage you to use artificial

I would say use natural.

Charge a little bit more if you have to for it

Um but, give the people what they need, not always what they want

Uh so, good product

I would definitely approve this for [music] purchase

Just watch out on the sugar

Be very cautious and aware [music] of what's inside of it from that

standpoint

But, taste is great

Price is great

Nutrition is is pretty good, man

Outside of the sugar, which is a big deal

But, you let me know if it's a big deal for you or not

That's your life

This ain't my life, baby

I know I'm doing over here

So, I'll see you next time on Superchef vs

Supermarket.

Uh DM me on social media Superchef_23

I want to know what you want me to see

If you see a new product out there you haven't seen yet, I Let me let [music] me put it to the test

See you next time

Oh.

Episode description

Today we’re diving into the Musselman’s Honey Cinnamon Apple Sauce Big Cups. We all know the classic, but does the addition of honey and extra cinnamon actually make it better—or just more sugary?
