Private Selection BBQ Pork Bao REVIEW — Hidden Gem or Grocery Fail? SUPERCHEF VS SUPERMARKET

Nov 25, 2025 · 7:06

Summary

Darnell raids Kroger's frozen section to test Private Selection's BBQ Pork Bao Buns, and honestly? They're a knockout. For just $4.99 for two, these steamed buns pack moist, perfectly seasoned pulled pork without the overwhelming sweetness you'd expect from a mass-produced grocery item. The texture is insanely soft, the filling's generous, and the flavor rivals what you'd pay double for at an actual restaurant. Darnell's practically geeking out about serving these at dinner parties, cutting them in half with cilantro and sauce. It's proof that supermarket challenges aren't always about finding disasters. Sometimes you find hidden gems worth buying on repeat.

All right, so [music] welcome back to this episode of Super Chefer Supermarket

I wanted to try pre-made stuff because everybody's on the go

You know, you don't always have time to sit down and cook

I can show you some cooking, but right now, I wanted to try these

We're inside of Kroger

This is

their private select [music] barbecue pork bow buns

First of all, they [music] look perfect

They feel soft

But let's take them to the kitchen

Actually see if it's worth picking up for your lunch break. [music] All right

So, we're back in the kitchen here with these bow buns that you seen

us have

These private select by Zinchi

I don't know who that is, but I think it's the maker of them

Um, these bow buns

These are pork bow buns

The bow buns are just soft and fluffy steamed buns

You know what I'm saying? They're yeast leavened. [music] I mean, amazing

Their texture is always off the charts.

It's a texture bomb, but in the soft way

I think that's why I like Buns have a little something crunchy in the middle of them

Come something crunchy on top

Um, so let's get straight to this

I mean, price price

They don't talk no stuff on this packaging by the [music] way

It get straight to it

You know

what I'm saying? So, shout out to them or don't shout out to them

Maybe they should have put something on here

Let us know that, hey, these were made here and this

I don't know

But they say nothing

No bragging, nothing on their product

They just say microwave

Transfer item onto a microwave

container. [music] Heat product until it's 165°

It don't even tell you how long to cook it for

But uh Cortez, does it tell you how long to cook it for? It didn't

Well, he said to take about 2 minutes to do it, [music] but they don't have really any instructions on there outside of cook it until it's at a

certain temperature, which is going to be that's that gives you a C right there starting off the back because how people the people not to tell them what to do because people need to be told how to warm up something

Don't say until it's 165

Like that's that gives people too many chances of burning something. put

this mug in there on 7 minutes and walk away

Next thing you know, your bug be hard as a rock

Uh like some overcooked pizza from the LA [music] for the next day where you got in the microwave for too long

So it doesn't talk stuff on product people

But it's good the price

It does have a price cuz you got to pay

for everything in this country [music] as you know

Uh $4.99 for two

Debatable

Debatable

Debatable

If you think [music] that's that's expensive

Um I go to ramen places all the time and I order bow buns. uh usually comes with two for about what? $6.99 usually $8.99 for two

So $4.99 for two and they're

usually sandwiches

This one's like enclosed

So I mean I think it's a good price compared to what you pay for in restaurants

So kudos though

B+ for price

Two for it's $5

So $ 250 each

That's cheaper than it is at the restaurant

So if we want to base it off of where they usually are eating at,

which is restaurants, this is a good price

Bus

Now let's go to uh nutrition

This looks so good and it smells [music] just like a bow

Uh nutrition actually didn't have a nutritional label

I don't know how it didn't have the chart that says [music] like calories, everything

like that, but it does say the ingredients

Um and we ripped it off a little bit

So, let's let's be honest here

So, we're not going to really grade this one on nutrition, but I know it says some monosaturated I don't know too many words I can't pronounce

So, because I don't have the

full nutritional facts, I won't grade it

I'll be fair to them

I won't tear apart, but we can taste this out for sure

And this was brought, this is private select, which is a Kroger product

Um, Kroger is usually on the East Coast

Um, but they do have other stores like in Arizona is fries

LA, I

forget what it's called, but they have other stores across the country

So, let's go ahead and dive into this

First of all, smell doesn't really smell like much

It's a bow bun

It's a steam bun

You [music] can't smell what's inside of it usually

Um, but the texture is golden

Like just see the press on that.

Oh my gosh

I'm not going to lie

Going to be a warm-up product

Starting off in a good direction

So, I'm going to break this open before I try it

Got the barbecued pork inside

Looks like it's nicely stuffed

I always wonder sometimes if you buy [music] like this if it's going to be so much bread

and no stuffing, but I mean it's not bad for you

Smells good

It's barbecue pork

Doesn't have It's not like [music] It's barbecue

I don't smell I don't smell barbecue sauce

I just smell like the barbecue flavor of like smoke

Not going to lie, I have no reason to

lie, upsell anything

They ain't paying me people and and I would never be paid [music] to taste some food and tell you if I thought it was good or not

This is good though

Let's just calm it down for a sec

Let's bring the temperature down

The motive

This is where Evan [music] dropped that beat

down some

This is surprisingly good

And I say surprisingly because I mean it should be buns are made in astronomical numbers um by like just factories

This is good though

The texture of the bread is so soft and fluffy

Um this is some it's a really

good bound

The barbecue is not too sweet

The meat is not dry

It's still moist

Um, it just gives you a little sweetness, but not like overly sweet

They kept the meat the meat as the main part of this

Even though it's barbecue pork, they didn't um or barbecue pork,

they didn't overkill it

This is a really good product

Oh, definitely turn these up at your dinner parties

Um, maybe put some Korean barbecue sauce with it

Um, here got little pieces of fat in here

This is delicious

Not going to lie

Not going to lie

I'm highly impressed

From

the fat to the taste, the seasoning on the meat is point on

Not dry at all

The bun is soft as a and what's the air mattresses called? [music] Expensive ones

Soft as a air mattress

Expensive

This is good

I'd give this a B+++

Um, you could actually sell these

[music] in a restaurant and no one would know

That's how good they are

Don't tell restaurants start doing that

But this is great for a I mean, a lot of chefs cater

A lot of chefs do a lot of different things

This is a great product to have

So, definitely worth the price now for sure

Like, let's get

past that

Taste B+

Um, this is a great idea

If I was doing anything about serving these, like this is something that either for a Asian night, say sometimes my kids want ramen

This is a good little give them one per kid for with their ramen

Or if you're having a dinner party, cut these in half, serve

them up, a little sauce, a little cilantro

This [music] is a knock out the park

Easy, easy, easy

All right, these these pork bow buns from Private Select by Zeni, they hitting, man

This Super Shepard Supermarket

Let's go, cuz I want to eat these

So, see you next episode.
